For a brief overview of Washington State’s 39 independently elected Sheriff’s Offices, click on the county of choice from the dropdown menu.
NOTE: Do not try and compare population, staffing, and budget between agencies.
Each Sheriff’s Office has different divisions and responsibilities. Some may be responsible for operating a jail, an emergency 911 communications center, or an animal services function. Others do not.
Some Sheriff’s Offices also provide contract law enforcement services for incorporated cities, or have a large number of independent municipal police agencies providing service outside of the Sheriff’s Office.
