Chelan County is Wenatchee, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of 2017 the estimated population was 76,533. The county seat is at Wenatchee, which is also the county’s largest city. “Chelan” derives from a Chelan Indian word meaning “deep water,” likely a reference to 55-mile-long Lake Chelan, which reaches a maximum depth of 1,486 feet.
Chelan County was created out of Okanogan and Kittitas Counties on March 13, 1899.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,994 square miles, of which, 2,921 square miles of it is land and 72 square miles of it (2.41%) is water. The population density is 23 per square mile.
