Garfield County is part of the Palouse, a wide and rolling prairie-like region of the middle Columbia basin. As of 2017, the estimated population was 2,210, making it the least populous county in the state. The county seat is at Pomeroy, the county’s only city. It was named after U.S. President James A. Garfield.
Garfield County was created out of Columbia County on November 29, 1881.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 718 square miles, of which, 711 square miles of it is land and 8 square miles of it (1.06%) is water. The population density is 3 per square mile.
